in which we are always improving

Y'know, since I'm sure that this entry just left you biting your nails with the suspense of it all, I'll let you in on how it was resolved: I recalled that in addition to eggs, this batter also calls for milk, and then I recalled that the remaining milk of the gallon that the waffle milk came from had gone bad in the week since I made the batter ... an unnecessarily complicated explanation yes, but then I tend to be unnecessarily complicated in most circumstances. In short, I figured if the rest of the milk in the jug had soured, the milk in the batter probably couldn't be in better shape. Yes, I put my brilliance to good use.

In related news, I made waffles today. This would be like ... the fourth attempt I've made at waffles since getting a waffle maker for Christmas, and I am happy to report that I'm getting better at making the waffles actually taste good. Now, you might think that if you bother to buy mix that requires milk and eggs and oil as opposed to say, just water, that you could expect the resulting waffles to be rather tasty just because you put the right amount of everything in them. Well, you'd think wrong if you assumed something so silly.

I suppose the reason for this would possibly be simply that we all have our individual tastes, and perhaps the mix as it comes off the shelf is geared to be the least-offensive to the greatest majority of palates, as opposed to being actually good to any of us. That's my theory at least, because ever since the first batch I've been adding and removing stuff to try and get the waffles to require less drenching in syrup. Not that I mind syrup obviously, it's just that I believe a good waffle shouldn't really require much. And I'll take a stand on that.

Oh, here's something kind of good -- I'm still screwed financially, they almost surely will take my car shortly if it's not already gone, but on the plus side I'm not as screwed as I was originally thinking. It's funny, because it turns out that I underestimate myself.

Or, from another perspective, we could say that I can apparently predict myself very well. Having finally delved into the big pile o' bills that I wasn't looking at because I couldn't pay them, it turns out that part of why I was so broke in the first place is that I overpaid a lot of the stuff back in January ... apparently I somehow knew the malaise was coming, and wished to make some pre-emptive strikes at fending off the vultures. What's funny about that is that it means that if I hadn't pulled myself into a reclusive little ball and stopped doing anything productive at all, that my life could have continued on without missing a beat.

Kinda funny, huh?

Well, that was nice of me back in December to try and give myself a fighting chance. I'll have to remember to send myself a card for that. Nice, but a wasted effort. I'm screwing it up, regardless...
