Christy was bright enough to know:

"A gallon of water is heavier. While most liquids shrink when they solidify, water expands, and this means that ice is less dense than liquid water (density being mass/volume). This means that if you take an equal volume, the liquid water will be heavier. This is why ice floats in a glass of water."
